Juan Manuel DeBiedma (born June 21, 1993 ), mainly known as Hungrybox or HBox for short , is an Argentine - American esports professional in various games of the Super Smash Bros. -Line. As one of the so-called five gods of Melee along with Jason Zimmerman ( Mew2King or M2K ), Joseph Marquez ( Mango ), Adam Lindgren ( Armada ) and Kevin Nanney ( Dr. PeePee or PPMD ), DeBiedma has won several major tournaments, including Apex 2010 and EVO 2016. (As gods, people are generally summarized in a discipline, whose performance differs so far from the other competitors that when they take part in a tournament they win most of the time, but the ranking among each other is not clear or subject to frequent changes.) DeBiedma is widely regarded as the best Jigglypuff player and has consistently been among the top five players in the world since the official ranking began in 2013. Joseph Marquez also played Jigglypuff in the past. Since Adam Lindgren in 2015 next to Peach and Fox plays, he is the only one of the five gods , the whole of his Melee- and Project M career exclusively uses a character.

DeBiedma holds the record for the highest cash prize won in a single Melee tournament at $ 29,315.30 at Smash Summit 5 in November 2017 , and has won more cash total for Melee than any other player. DeBiedma has also played Project M and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U in the past , playing mostly Jigglypuff in the former and Mario in the latter. After the game was released, he began participating in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournaments with Jigglypuff . He is a member of the e-sports clan Team Liquid .

Career

Hungrybox claims that he “got good at gimmicks” and that his hands are not fast enough for technical dexterity. In 2009, DeBiedma finished third in Genesis 1 , his first high ranking in a major Melee tournament. Later that year, he won his first tournament at Revival of Melee 2 . Hungrybox continued to get good rankings in tournaments where he often ended up in 2nd and 5th place. In 2014, he finished in the top three of nine Melee tournaments, including a win at Fight Pitt V and second place at EVO 2014. In 2015, DeBiedma took his first national win at Paragon of the year after easily defeating Jason Zimmerman in the final would have.

On July 3, 2013 DeBiedma was added to the side of Aziz Al-Yami ( Hax ) of CLASH Tournaments . On April 17, 2014 DeBiedma left CLASH Tournaments and joined Team Curse . On January 6, 2015, Team Curse announced that they wanted to merge with Team Liquid . Due to the merger, DeBiedma was taken over by Team Liquid along with his teammate Kaschan Khan and joined Ken and the KoreanDJ. Due to the merger, DeBiedma was taken over by Team Liquid together with his teammate Kaschan Khan ( Chillin ) and joined Ken Hoang and the KoreanDJ .

In August 2015, DeBiedma announced that as he began his career as an engineer, he would become less active as a player. Paragon Los Angeles was his next tournament after EVO. He finished third after being defeated 3-2 by Mew2King . In the biggest Project M tournament in history, Hungrybox finished fourth, also after losing to Mew2King . In October, Hungrybox won the MLG World Finals Melee in individual bout after beating Mew2King 3-1 in the finals and winning the tournament. In November, Hungrybox won the Dreamhack Winter 2015 Melee after beating Armada 3-1 in the second set of the finals after losing 3-0 in the first set of the finals, and won the 2v2 tournament together with Ax with a 3-1 win over Shroomed and MacD in the finals.

With the victory over Armada he became SSBM champion at the EVO 2016. DeBiedma was sent to the loser group (for winners and losers group see double knock-out ; practically all smash tournaments use double knock-out as a tournament form) after he in the semifinals of the winning group Justin McGrath ( Plup ) was defeated, but was able to fight back to the finals after the elimination of S2J , Mango and Plup against Armada . There he beat Armada, who took on the character Fox, in two best-of-five sets, both of which he won 3-2.

Private life

DeBiedma was born in Argentina on June 21, 1993. He graduated from Freedom High School in Orlando in 2011 and graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 2015 . In 2015 he started working as a process engineer at WestRock. In 2016, DeBiedma quit WestRock after underperforming in The Big House 6 smash tournament to pursue his esports career full time. In March 2018, however, he quietly returned to the workforce at an undisclosed location. In June 2019, after winning Community Effort Orlando for the fourth time , he announced that he would be leaving the company to devote himself entirely to eSports.

On August 15, 2017, DeBiedma became a citizen of the United States .

Media

On January 26, 2020, the YouTuber EmpLemon published a documentary about Hungrybox as the fifth part of his Never Ever series with the title [T] here will Never Ever be another Melee player like Hungrybox (German for example: “Never again will it be a Melee- Giving players like Hungybox ”).

"It is my personal belief that human beings are naturally meant to persevere. No matter what happens, as long as we simply make the decision not to give up, it simply does get better if you believe it will. There are certain experiences that even thinking about - the act of thinking about it - sets you back, maybe all the way back to all the work you've done, just by thinking about it. But that's not the point. The point is you need to focus on the fact that you overcame it and if you're going through it, focus on the fact that you are choosing to overcome it. You're pushing through, that's more than anyone can ask of you. "
