Juan Esteban Pedernera

Juan Esteban Pedernera (born December 25, 1796 in San José del Morro, San Luis ; † February 1, 1886 in Buenos Aires ) was the second Vice President from March 5, 1860 to November 5, 1861 and from November 5, 1861 to December 12, 1861 the fifth President of Argentina .

Life

Juan Esteban Pedernera was born in 1796 to Juan Esteban and Dominga Pedernera in the province of San Luis. He received his training in a Franciscan monastery . After school he fought as a grenadier in the troops of José de San Martín in the war of independence against the Spaniards. He then took part in the Battle of Chacabuco and the expedition to liberate Peru . He was arrested by the Spaniards during the battle on Chiloé , but managed to escape and returned to his troops.

In 1826 he took part in the war between Argentina and Brazil . Later, in the Argentine civil war , he sided with the Unitarians and fought alongside General José María Paz against Juan Manuel de Rosas in La Tablada . He then spent some time in exile, but returned to Argentina after Rosas' fall and became a senator for the province of San Luis. In 1856 he was appointed commander of the border troops and in 1859 governor of San Luis. In the same year he also took part in the Battle of Cepeda . Under the president Santiago Derqui he was first vice-president, then after his resignation for five weeks interim president of Argentina before he had to hand over the office to Bartolomé Miter , the Derquis had defeated government troops. In 1882 he was finally appointed lieutenant general in the republican army.

Pedernera married Rosa Juana Heredia on September 23, 1823 (* 1805 in Peru, † August 26, 1886 in Buenos Aires).
