biography

Juan "Chapetes" Gómez learned to play football at Club Occidente de Atemajac and probably signed his first professional contract in 1944 or 1945 with Atlas Guadalajara , with whom he won the 1946 cup . Five years later, he led the Rojinegros as captain in the 1950/51 season to their only championship title . At Atlas he was under contract until at least 1954 and in the same year came to a World Cup appearance against Brazil (0: 5), which was also his only assignment for the Mexican national team . He then switched to CD Tampico , in whose ranks he let his active career end.

In the last months of his life, Gómez had serious health problems. He died on Saturday, May 9th, 2009.

Nickname

His nickname Chapetes, a common name in Latin America for newly arrived Europeans, came from his red cheeks, which he often had while playing.
