Juan Manuel Blanes
Juan Manuel Blanes (born June 8, 1830 in Montevideo , Uruguay , † April 15, 1901 in Pisa , Italy ) was a Uruguayan painter . He was a representative of realism . His favorite subjects were historical events and the life of the gauchos .
Life
His youth was shaped by the civil war in Uruguay . During this time he worked as a printer's assistant. As an artist he was mostly self-taught. Blanes began painting in 1844 and moved to Salto in 1855 , where he taught. In 1857 he moved to Buenos Aires , in 1859 he received a scholarship for a stay in Italy.
Blanes saw himself as an American painter. In his works he attached great importance to historical accuracy and attention to detail. In addition to his history paintings , he created numerous idealizing and romanticizing depictions of gaucho life.
In 1898 Blanes moved to Pisa, Italy, where he died three years later. The Museum of Fine Arts in Montevideo, the Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes "Juan Manuel Blanes" , founded in 1930 , bears his name. A few meters east of the Teatro Solís there is a monument in honor of the painter.
