Juan Nepomuceno de Orbe y Mariaca (born May 2, 1817 in Ermua ; † April 21, 1891 ibid), fourth Marquis of Valdespina ( Spanish : marqués de Valdespina , 1850-1891) was a Spanish politician and military person.

Life

He was the only surviving son of Marshal José María de Orbe y Elío, third Marquis of Valdespina and Carlist military leader . As a youth, Juan Nepomuceno fought on the instructions of his father in the First Carlist War (1833-1840).

After the Vergara Agreement , which the Marquis of Valdespina rejected, he went into exile with his father in France. At the age of 22 he received the rank of commander . In 1850, after the death of his father, Juan Nepomuceno de Orbe y Mariaca inherited not only the title of Marquis de Valdespina, but also his father's position among the Carlist.

In 1860 the Marquis participated in the Carlist revolt of Sant Carles de la Ràpita . After the revolution of 1868 , which led to the abdication of Queen Isabella II, Juan Nepomuceno de Orbe y Mariaca occupied an important political position in Basque Carlism. In 1871 he was elected Spanish Senator and represented Vizcaya during the Sexenio Democrático . It was not until 1872 and later in 1873 that the Marquis rose on the side of the Carlist in the Third Carlist War (1872–1876). During the war Valdespina held the post of Chief of the General Staff. During the war he became Comandante General von Vizcaya and Lieutenant General . At the end of the war he went into exile in France. He returned to Spain in 1880 and became the leader of the Carlist in Basque Country and Navarre .

In 1891, shortly before his death, the Carlist pretendent Carlos VII awarded him the honorary title of captain-general . Juan Nepomuceno de Orbe y Mariaca fathered two sons (José María de Orbe y Gaytán de Ayala, 5th Marquis of Valdespina, and Cándido María de Orbe y Gaytán de Ayala) who also played a role as respected figures of Carlism.
