Copiapoa marginata is a species of the genus Copiapoa in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet marginata comes from Latin and means 'provided with a margin, rimmed'.

description

Copiapoa marginata grows individually or often in groups with short, woody tap roots. The grass-green shoots are cylindrically shaped and often tapered slightly towards the tip. They grow to be 20 to 50 inches long and 7 to 10 inches in diameter. The 10 to 14  ribs are broad, blunt and barely humped. The areoles are very close to confluent. The thorns are black and graying with age. There are one to three central spines 2.5 to 4 centimeters in length and five to ten radial spines 1 to 1.5 centimeters in length.

The flowers are light yellow. They smell and are 2.5 to 3.5 inches long. The round fruits are green or reddish and measure up to one centimeter in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Copiapoa marginata is common in Chile in the Región de Atacama south of Chaldera north to just north of Chañaral .

It was first described in 1845 as Echinocactus marginatus by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in 1922 to the genus Copiapoa established by them . Another synonym is Copiapoa streptocaulon (Hooker) F. Ritter (1961).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT)", d. H. listed as low risk.
