Juan Romero (Judoka)

Juan Francisco Romero Calabria (born October 19, 1988 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan judoka .

Depending on the source, Juan Romero is 1.87 meters or 1.88 meters tall and competes in the weight class up to 90 kg. Romero, who lives in Prado, is a member of Club Atlético Olimpia de Colón and is coached by Leandro Vaz . At the South American Championships in 2009 he won the bronze medal. He was part of the Uruguayan team at the 2010 South American Games in Medellín . Romero was part of the Uruguayan team for the 2012 Summer Olympics . He secured his first participation in this competition with a fifth place at the Pan American Judo Championships in Montreal . In London, Romero, at that time the 99th in the world rankings, was eliminated in the first round after a defeat by Ippon after 3 minutes and 12 seconds against the world number 15. and later Olympic champion Song Dae-Nam from South Korea . At the South American Games in Chile in 2014 , he was also part of the Uruguayan team and won the silver medal in the 90 kg class behind Venezuelan Mervin Rodriguez . In the following year he took part with the Uruguayan team in the Pan American Games 2015 in Toronto and took 7th place in the class up to 90 kg.

Awards

As part of the honors of the best Uruguayan athletes of the period 2009-2010 ("Deportista del Año"), he was honored on March 28, 2011 by the Comité Olímpico Uruguayo in the Teatro Solís as the best athlete of the year 2009 in the category "Judo".
