Juana Marta Rodas (born February 8, 1925 in Itá , Departamento Central , † August 8, 2013 ibid) was a Paraguayan ceramic artist .

life and work

Juana Marta Rodas lived in the city of Itá, which is known for pottery and is jokingly called the capital of ceramics . Rodas was taught how to work with ceramics by her grandmother Mara Balbina Cuevas and her mother Juana de Jesús Oviedo and passed on her knowledge and skills to her daughter Julia Isídrez .

In an environment in which traditional ceramic goods such as jugs or crockery are made, Rhodas developed figures that serve no purpose, are detached from all discourse , stand between traditional handicraft and modernity and can only be understood as aesthetic objects.

Juana Marta Rodas and her daughter Julia Isídrez have participated in international exhibitions at the Museo del Barro , Asunción (1995, 1998, 1999, 2009), the Trienal de Chile (2009) and the Bienal do Mercosul in Porto Alegre (1999). In 1999 Rodas and Isídrez received the Prince Claus Prize and in 2012 the ceramic works were shown at dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel.
