James Woods (born January 19, 1992 in Sheffield ) is a British freestyle skier . He starts in the freestyle disciplines. His greatest success is the 2019 slopestyle world championship.

Career

Woods made his debut in the Freestyle Skiing World Cup in January 2008 in Les Contamines and finished 37th on the halfpipe . Since 2009 he has also taken part in competitions on the AFP World Tour . He achieved his first podium finish in January 2009 at the Polish Open in Zakopane with third place in Big Air . At the 2011 Freestyle Skiing World Championships in Park City , he came 19th in the halfpipe competition and eighth in slopestyle . In March 2011 he won the bronze medal in slopestyle at the Winter X Games Europe in Tignes . At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he won his first World Cup victory in slopestyle in Ushuaia . Another World Cup victory in Copper Mountain followed . In January 2013 he won the bronze medal in slopestyle at the Winter X Games in Aspen . Two months later, he won silver in slopestyle at the 2013 Freestyle Skiing World Championships in Voss . He finished the season in third place in the AFP Slopestyle Ranking and first place in the Slopestyle World Cup. At the beginning of the following season he came in second place in the Slopestyle at the World Cup in Cardrona and at the New Zealand Freeski Open. In his first Olympic participation in Sochi in 2014 , he finished fifth in the first-ever slopestyle competition.

At the beginning of the 2014/15 season Woods won in slopestyle at the Freeski Open of New Zealand in Cardrona . In the further course of the season he took third place in Big Air at the One Hit Wonder in Thredbo and in slopestyle at the Dumont Cup in Newry . At the AFP World Tour Finals in Whistler he took second place in Big Air. At the beginning of the following season he won his third World Cup in Slopestyle in Cardrona and won in Slopestyle at The North Face Freeski Open in Cardrona . At the Winter X Games 2016 in Aspen he came fourth in Slopestyle and ninth place in Big Air at the X Games Oslo 2016. In March 2016 he was third in Slopestyle at the European Freeski Open in Laax and at the SFR Freestyle Tour in La Clusaz . At the end of the season he won the Big Air event Fridge Festival in Obertauern and reached 14th place in the overall World Cup and fourth place in the Slopestyle World Cup.

At the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Woods won twice in slopestyle at The Cardrona Games and at the Monster Energy Big Air event in Cardrona. In January 2017 he won the gold medal in Big Air at the Winter X Games 2017 in Aspen . He also finished fourth in slopestyle. The following month he finished second in the Slopestyle World Cup in Quebec . In March 2017 he won the bronze medal in slopestyle at the X-Games Norway 2017 in Hafjell and at the Freestyle Skiing World Championships in Sierra Nevada . He finished the season in seventh place in the Slopestyle World Cup. In the 2017/18 season he won the Slopestyle in Cardrona and took third place in the Slopestyle on the Alpe di Siusi . At the end of the season he reached 25th place in the overall World Cup and fourth place in the Slopestyle World Cup. At the end of January 2018, he won the bronze medal in Big Air at the Winter X Games and also came ninth in slopestyle. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he was fourth in slopestyle and seventh in Big Air at the X-Games Norway 2018 in Fornebu .

At the 2019 World Championships in Park Woods achieved the greatest success of his career by winning the gold medal.
