Judith Simser
Judith Simser , also Judith Irwin Simser , OO is a Canadian educator , pioneer of auditory-verbal education and hearing training for the cochlear implant .
life and work
Judith Simser attended the Trafalgar School for Girls in Québec from 1956 to 1959 and then studied at McGill University in Montreal , where she graduated with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.). In England she earned the Overseas Diploma in Deaf Education from the National College of Teachers of the Deaf (NCTD) (now The British Association of Teachers of the Deaf (BATOD) ) and in Washington, DC Diplomas in Auditory-Verbal Therapy and Listening and Spoken Language of the AG Bell Academy .
Her career as a deaf educator began in the 1970s after the birth of her deaf son. She went on to graduate with Masters of Business Administration and Practical Law degrees . Her son with normal hearing holds a master's degree in deaf education. After an internship in Canada, she was a supervisor for the Aural Habilitation program in the Audiology Department of Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario from 1975 to 1994 . At the same time, she taught in her field at McGill's School of Human Communication Disorders in Montreal from 1977 to 1989 .
From 1995 to 2001 she lived in Taiwan , built two audio-verbal centers and trained therapists. In Singapore , where she is still an international counselor, she trained therapists and parents from various Southeast Asian countries and Australia.
In the United States, she was a director and task force member of Auditory-Verbal International . She has written numerous publications and created audio-visual training programs.
“ The longer acoustic input is withheld from the brain, the greater the resulting sensory deprivation, which causes a lack of sensory stimulation in the brain. Not only does sensory deprivation prevent auditory learning, it also prevents neural growth. In the absence of normal stimulation, there is a sensitive period up to about 3.5 years during which the human central auditory system remains maximally plastic, after the age of 7 the plasticity is greatly reduced. "
Awards
- In 1992 she was awarded the Order of Ontario for her contribution to spoken language development in hearing impaired children.
- In 1993 she received the Canada 125th Commemorative Medal from the Canadian government.
- Since 2007 she has been Alexander Graham Bell Global Ambassador , nationally and internationally recognized and sought-after as a consultant for Auditory-Verbal Therapy (AVT) and as a mentor for training and as an author for therapist and parenting programs.
- For her generous dedication, contributions, and widely accepted expertise, she was selected as one of the 125 Women of Trafalgar .
