Judy Clarke
Judy Clarke (* 1952 in Asheville , North Carolina ) is an American lawyer who became known around the world as a criminal defense attorney in several spectacular cases.
Life
Clarke grew up in Asheville , North Carolina. She is married to Professor Speedy Rice .

Clarke received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Furman University in 1974 and a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina in 1977 .
After her training, she worked as a criminal defense attorney for Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. , where she was Executive Director from 1983 to 1991. She then moved to McKenne & Cuneo in San Diego as a partner , remained so from 1991 to 1992 and worked from 1992 to 2001 as Executive Director for the Federal Defenders of Eastern Washington and Idaho in Spokane. She has been the National Capital Resource Counsel of the Federal Public and Community Defenders in San Diego since 2002 .
From 1996 to 1997, Clarke was President of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers . Since 2006 she has taught several times at Washington and Lee University .
Known cases
Judy Clarke has served as defense attorney on the following cases, among others:
- Susan Smith was sentenced to life imprisonment on July 22, 1995 for the murder of her two sons . On November 4, 2024, after serving a sentence of thirty years, there is the option of remaining suspension on probation .
- “Unabomber” Theodore Kaczynski was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole on May 4, 1998 for three murders and 23 bodily harm. Through an agreement with the prosecutor, Clarke had averted the death penalty for her client here .
- Eric Rudolph was sentenced to four life imprisonment for the bomb attack at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta on April 8, 2005.
- Zacarias Moussaoui was sentenced to life imprisonment on May 3, 2006 for participating in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks .
- On January 10, 2011, Clarke was named as defense attorney for Jared Lee Loughner, who carried out an assassination attempt on Congressman Gabrielle Giffords . The offender was accused of two murders and three attempted murders, among other things.
- Judy Clarke and three other lawyers took on the defense of Jochar Zarnayev , one of the defendants in the trial of the attack on the Boston Marathon .
