Judy Mallaber

Clare Judith "Judy" Mallaber (* 10. July 1951 in Colindale ) is a British politician of the Labor Party . She was a member of the House of Commons from 1997 to 2010 .

Education and professional career

Mallaber received her education at the North London Collegiate School in the London borough of Edgware . This was followed by studies at the castle St Anne's College of Oxford University at. There she was awarded the Bachelor of Arts with distinction. From 1975 to 1985, Mallaber worked as a research assistant for the National Union of Public Employees , a union for public service workers . There she rose to head of department. In 1985, she joined the Local Government Information Unit , a think tank in London, as a director . She worked there until 1996.

Political career

Mallaber began to be politically active in the 1970s. She was initially a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain . She was later a member of the Labor Party's local chapters in Hornsey and Wood Green . In the 1997 general election , Mallaber was part of a women's electoral list . Through this she was elected to the House of Commons as MP for the constituency of Amber Valley . With 29,943 or 54.7% of the votes cast, she clearly prevailed against the previous incumbent of the Conservative Party , Phillip Oppenheim . She was confirmed in office in the 2001 and 2005 elections. During her time as a MP, Mallaber was a member of the Finance Committee , the Commerce Committee and the Education Committee of Parliament. She also headed the Labor Research Department . In 2006 and 2011 she traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo as an independent election observer . In the 2010 general election, Mallaber lost to Conservative Party candidate Nigel Mills with just 536 votes.

Memberships

Mallaber is a member of UNISON , the second largest trade union in the UK. She is also a member of the Liberty and Socialist Education Association .
