Judy Rafat

Judy Rafat (* 1956 in Toronto ) is a Canadian jazz singer .

Life

Rafat grew up in a musical family. After studying music with the main subjects singing and flute at the University of Western Ontario , she settled in Germany after an extensive European tour. She first became known as a folk singer.

In 1986 she met Dizzy Gillespie and from then on was enthusiastic about jazz . Gillespie became her mentor, and they were close friends until his death in 1992. From 1994 Rafat was a lecturer for jazz singing at the Gerhard Mercator University in Duisburg . In 1996 Rafat performed with the Dave Brubeck Quintet , which increased their popularity in the scene.

In 1997 Rafat released the album Con Alma , on which she interprets compositions by Gillespie, some of which she wrote texts for herself. Rafat has worked with Kenny Barron , Frank Wess , Rufus Reid , Ignacio Berroa , Claudio Roditi , Mike Longo , Paquito D'Rivera and John Lee .

Since 2000, Rafat has devoted himself increasingly to the training of young talents and founded her own singing school "School of Vocal Music" for this purpose.
