The Juessee [ ˈjyːs- ] (also called Jues or Jues-See , old name also Ghüs ) is located in the middle of the city of Herzberg am Harz .

description

The lake has a water area of 6.88 hectares (0.069 km²) and an approximately 1.2 km long shoreline. The maximum depth stated is 28.5 meters. The northwest bank is densely overgrown with water lilies . The city of Herzberg's outdoor swimming pool is located on the east bank . The body of water was created around 8,000 to 14,000 years ago by two large sinkholes . The karst hiking trail leads past the Juessee. Investigations of the up to 16 m thick sediments made it possible to gain knowledge of the settlement history of this area over the past millennia. Sediment studies were also carried out in the nearby Aschenhütte pond .

The Eichelbach flows into the Kleiner Juessee on the east bank. The drain is on the northwest bank of the Großer Juessee; it can be regulated by a weir . Further sinkholes are known in the area of the lower reaches of the Eichelbach and the urban area of Herzberg . The steadily progressing leaching of the Werra anhydrite underground still leads to sinkholes in this area. The bottom of the Juessee is also active in subsidence.

In summer there is hardly any fresh water inflow into the Eichelbach, as it loses its water in the karst underground before the Juessee . Algal blooms in summer indicate eutrophication .

Events

Every year in April, the 5,200 m or 10,400 m long Juessee run, organized by MTV Herzberg, takes place, with four or eight laps around the lake.

Until 2017 the Juesseefest took place 23 times with numerous music and dance events. The organizer is the DLRG local association and MTV Herzberg.
