Goal and organization

Since 1981, the United Nations (UN) has recommended its member states to send youth delegates to ensure better youth participation . Many countries, u. a. Germany (since 2005) and Austria also take up this offer and select youth delegates who are part of the diplomatic delegation of their respective country to the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York City . Each participating country sends one to six youth delegates every year.

The youth delegates are prepared for their appearance for six months, including a. Meetings are held with youth delegates from other countries to simulate the way the UN works.

Germany

The youth delegate program has existed in Germany since 2005. What is unique worldwide is that the German youth delegates complete a so-called “Germany tour” in order to record the expectations and wishes of young people from all over Germany. Discussions with youth groups and school classes take place here. These impressions and ideas will then be presented to the UN General Assembly in October. In 2019 Nikolas Karanikolas and Josephine Hebling are the German youth delegates to the UN General Assembly. Last year it was Antonia Kuhn and Lukas Schlapp. In Germany, participation is advertised annually and the delegates are named by the sponsors of the youth delegate program.
