Juha Pihkala

Martti Juha Antero Pihkala (born January 1, 1942 in Kouvola , Finland ) is former bishop of the Tampere diocese in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland . He worked in the episcopate from 1997 to 2008.

Pihkala graduated from the University of Helsinki with the Magister Theologiae exam in 1968 , and in 1978 he disputed for the doctoral degree . He is also a lecturer in dogmatics at Helsinki University. After Pihkala was ordained in 1967 , he worked as a parish pastor in Riihimäki and Loppi . He then worked from 1978 to 1985 as chief secretary of the Tampere diocese and from 1985 to 1996 as teacher and director of the training center of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church. Pihkala was elected Bishop of the Diocese of Tampere in November 1996 and consecrated on January 6, 1997. He retired in 2008.

Pihkala comes from the Gummerus family , to which many clergy used to belong.
