Jules Fouquet

Jules Emile Fouquet (* 6. February 1878 in Fontaine-Notre-Dame (Nord) , France ; † 19th July 1966 in Laon , France) was a blind French organist , the more than six decades as organist at the Cathedral of Laon active was.

Life

Jules Fouquet was born in early February 1878 in the small community of Fontaine-Notre-Dame in the North French department . Blind from birth , he learned Braille and also mastered writing on a typewriter. He had his finished texts read through by others and corrected if necessary. It is not known at which institution or with which teachers he completed his training as an organist.

In February 1899, the newly built main organ ( Grand Orgue ) of Laon Cathedral, an instrument from the workshop of the organ builder Henri Didier from Epinal , was inaugurated, and Jules Fouquet was appointed the cathedral's first titular organist at the age of 21. He held this office for 67 years without interruption until his death.

On January 9, 1919, Fouquet married Emilie Léonie Froussart in Laon, who died in Laon on April 18, 1935.

Jules Fouquet died in Laon on July 19, 1966 at the age of 88. His successor in the office of titular organist was his previous deputy Marie Ducrot .

Honors

The "Rue du Parvis" in the old town of Laon, which opens directly into the square in front of the cathedral, was renamed "Rue Jules Fouquet" after Fouquet's death.
