Julia Berta Culp (born October 6, 1880 in Groningen , Netherlands , † October 13, 1970 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch singer ( mezzo-soprano ). She was known as the "Dutch nightingale".

Life

Her singing career began with a performance on December 30, 1893 as a 13-year-old girl in the Groote Bovenzaal der Harmonie in Groningen. It is not known whether she was already taking singing lessons at that time. It is documented that she began to study singing at the Conservatory in Amsterdam in the summer of 1896 . There she studied with Cornélie van Zanten and graduated in 1900 with a diploma.

It is not entirely certain whether she moved to Berlin in 1901 or only in connection with her marriage to Erich Merten (co-owner of Merten & Knauff, Berlin and personal attaché of Kaiser Wilhelm II) on June 29, 1905. However, it is documented that she further trained her vocal technique with Etelka Gerster in Berlin .

She separated from her first husband in 1918 and married the major Viennese industrialist Baron Wilhelm G. von Ginskey in 1919.

In addition to Germany and the Netherlands, she sang internationally with great success. She is considered one of the best mezzo-sopranos of her time.
