Cornélie van Zanten

Wijntje Cornelia van Zanten (born August 2, 1855 in Dordrecht , † January 10, 1946 in The Hague ) was a Dutch opera singer (mezzo-soprano / alto). After her singing career she worked as a singing teacher and author.

Life

Among other things, she studied at the Conservatoire in Cologne and Milan (there under Francesco Lamperti ). In September 1875 she made her debut in Turin as Leonora in Donizetti's opera La favorita . In 1879 she went back to Germany, where she took on engagements at the opera houses in Breslau , Kassel (with Gustav Mahler as conductor) and Hamburg . During this time she composed her own songs , including Mijn Moedertaal in 1881 ( My mother tongue ).

In 1885 she went to America and became part of various opera companies. In 1887 she returned to Europe and worked in Russia (where she sang a complete Ring of the Nibelung ), in Holland and in Germany.

Van Zanten ended her singing career in 1895 and took over a professorship for solo singing at the Amsterdam Conservatory , where she taught several well-known Dutch singers, e. B. Jos Tijssen , Julia Culp and Tilly Koene .

From 1903 until the outbreak of the First World War, she took over the management of the master school for art singing in Berlin . In 1914 she moved to The Hague, where she continued to work as a classical singing teacher.

Van Zanten wrote several books on the art of singing and the human voice, which were published in German and Dutch. Her book Bel Canto of the Word: Teaching Voice Mastery through the Word (1911) was a standard work in singing lessons. In 1923 she made a film about the voice. However, there are no vocal recordings of her.
