Julia Zakia

Julia Zakia (born 1982 ) is a Brazilian director , screenwriter , camerawoman and producer .

life and work

She studied at the University of São Paulo with a focus on directing and camera. After graduating, Zakia directed six short films and two feature films . In 2004 she and partners founded Gato do Parque, a production company with a focus on audiovisual productions for cinema and television. After working on the short film Tarabatara about a Sinti and Roma family who live in northeastern Brazil, she wrote the script for her first feature film Rio Cigano ( Gypsi River ). To do this, she lived in Serbia and Bosnia for a year . The film, included in the Berlinale Talents , tells the story of two cousins ​​who grow up separately.

For the short film ( Frogs / Frösche ), which was shown as one of 19 Brazilian films at the Berlinale 2020 in the Generation Kplus section, she was involved in directing, alongside Ana Flavia Cavalcanti , as well as in editing and production.
