Juliana Berners
Juliana Berners (* around 1400 ; † after 1460 ) was an English writer .
Juliana Berners was one of England's earliest women writers. According to unclear tradition, she was the daughter of Sir James Berners , who was initially his favorite during the reign of Richard II , but was then beheaded in 1388. Berners became prioress of Sopwell Monastery near St Albans and died after 1460.
She loved hunting , especially falcon picking , fishing and heraldry . She wrote about these activities, partly in verse for contemporary reasons, the work The bokys of Hawkyng and Huntyng and also of Cootarmuris (St. Albans 1486, Gothic with woodcuts) , which is extremely rare in its first edition . Only two complete copies of the work are known, making it one of the most delicious pearls for British bibliophilia .
The book on heraldry, written around 1441, was added in later editions. The latest edition ( London 1811) is also a rarity, as only 150 copies were printed.
