Juliane Sybilla Caroline Engelen , called Julie (born September 12, 1805 in Glandorf , † January 26, 1898 in Hanover ) was the wife of the center politician Ludwig Windthorst .

Life

Julie Engelen was born as the daughter of the lawyer and landlord at Gut Oedingberge Ignaz Engelen († 1837) and his wife Franziska Karoline, née. Westendorf († 1865), born. Her brother Ferdinand Engelen († 1873) was a childhood friend of Ludwig Windthorst (1812-1891), whom she therefore met at an early age. On May 29, 1838, she and Windthorst married in the manor chapel of Gut Oedingberge. The ceremony was carried out by the Auxiliary Bishop Carl Anton Lüpke from Osnabrück . Julie Engelen, like Bismarck's wife Johanna von Puttkamer , had a decisive influence on Windthorst's basic moral and religious attitude, although she did not step out of the social role intended for her as wife and mother. It was only through them that the politician was introduced into ecclesiastical, clerical circles. His position in the Kulturkampf under Bismarck, especially his advocacy of state-recognized church marriage, could hardly have been credibly defended without an "exemplary Catholic marriage".

Ludwig Windthorst and Julie Engelen were married to four children: Maria (1841–1933), Anna (1843–1867), Julius (1844–1872) and Eduard (1848–1860). Ludwig Windthorst died in Berlin in 1891 after 52 years of marriage . Julie Engelen herself died on January 26, 1898 in Hanover . Her grave is in the Hasefriedhof in Osnabrück.

Julie Engelen is also said to have had a great influence on her nephew Carl Friedrich Engelen , who was to continue Windthorst's pro-Catholic opposition policy until the end of the Empire.
