Julie Elizabeth Smith, Baroness Smith of Newnham (born June 1, 1969 ) is a British political scientist and councilor for the Liberal Democrats .

Life

Julie Smith attended Merchant Taylors' Girls' School , one in Great Crosby ( Merseyside -based) private girls' school, and received their further education in Brasenose College and St Antony's College of Oxford University . She is a political scientist with a focus on European politics and lecturer in international relations at Cambridge University as well as a fellow of the Robinson College belonging to this university .

Julie Smith pursued not only an academic but also a political career. Since 2003 she has been a Liberal Democrat councilor for Newnham on Cambridge City Council . She is also deputy chairwoman of the Federal Political Committee of the Liberal Democrats.

In August 2014, it was announced that Julie Smith was about to become a Life Peer . On September 12, 2014, Queen Elizabeth II awarded her the title of Baroness Smith of Newnham, of Crosby in the County of Merseyside .
