Julius Fučík (composer)
Julius Ernest Wilhelm Fučík ( ˈjuːlɪjus ˈfutʃiːk ; he called himself Julius Vilém Arnošt Fučik; born July 18, 1872 in Prague , Austria-Hungary ; † September 25, 1916 in Berlin ) was a Czech composer and conductor .
Life
Julius Fučík studied bassoon , violin and drums in Prague and, after studying music, took composition lessons with Antonín Dvořák .
In 1891 he entered the military with the regimental music of the Lower Austrian house regiment, the kuk infantry regiment No. 49 in Krems an der Donau . Until 1894 he played under the military bandmaster Josef Franz Wagner . In 1895 he returned to Prague and took up a position as second bassoonist at the Deutsches Theater . In 1896 he was promoted to conductor of the Prague City Orchestra and the Danica Choir in Sisak , Croatia . In 1897 he became military bandmaster with the 86th Infantry Regiment in Sarajevo , Bosnia . Further stations as a military musician were Budapest and Theresienstadt .
Fučík's entry of the gladiators is also known as the “circus march” by people who otherwise do not know the composer, as many circus orchestras around the world use it as an overture to this day .
After his wedding, Fučík worked in Berlin from 1913, where he founded the Tempo publishing house , mainly composing. With his bands he gave open concerts in Prague and Berlin in front of an audience of over 10,000. After his untimely death at the age of 44, Fučík left behind over 400 compositions, including a mass and a requiem . He was buried in the vineyards cemetery in Prague.
Julius Fučík was the uncle of the writer and journalist Julius Fučík , who was executed by the National Socialists in Berlin.
