Julius Gustav Lange

Julius Gustav Lange (* 1815 in Potsdam ; † 1905 ibid) was a master butcher in Potsdam who, in addition to his job, devoted himself to the local history of the city and the medieval history of the Mark Brandenburg's coins .

Life

Long ancestors came from Saxony and came to Potsdam around 1730 during the reign of Friedrich Wilhelm I. Julius Lange worked there as a master in a butcher's shop, which he had taken over from his father in 1842 after completing his military service . In 1870 he retired at the age of 55 and devoted himself to coinage and the history of Potsdam. Already during his professional activity, when he went to markets and the surrounding villages as a cattle buyer  , Lange became aware of coin finds. He contributed to the recovery and description of various coin treasures. This includes re-excavations he initiated after the discovery of an earthen vessel and individual thin metal disks in September 1880 during agricultural work on the Michendorfer Wolkenberg. The Michendorf coin find with almost 1,800 coins from the years 1140 to 1184, one of the largest hoards with coins in Brandenburg, was recovered. The coins were denarii with the image of the Slav prince Pribislaw and bracteates with the image of the Ascan prince Albrecht the Bear . The so-called Petrissa penny was documented for the first time when it was found. This is the first time that the Slavic princess, who is said to have helped Albrecht the Bear to power in 1150, was proven to be a real historical personality.

In addition to the recovery and description of coin finds, Lange gave lectures at the Association for the History of Potsdam and published on various topics of local history. He not only collected himself, but also gave away and exchanged acquired coins for museums and public collections.
