biography

Since the death of the founder Franz Johann Kwizda von Hochstern in 1888 , his third son Julius Kwizda Edler von Hochstern, a qualified pharmacist and veterinarian , ran the business. Following the intentions of his father, he endeavored to maintain and consolidate the reputation of his company and to meet the demands of the time by introducing new articles for equestrian sports. He made the Kwizda patented rubber straps and all kinds of other Kwizda patent protection devices for horse's feetintroduced. Around 1900 the Kwizda patent pneumatic wrappers made of rubber with an air cushion also became very important and were widely used. Initially, these articles had to fight against sensitive competition from abroad. The energetic competition ended with the successful assertion of Kwizda's products, which after a short time completely displaced foreign articles.

Experts praised the Kwizda rubber strips and recommended them in their specialist books. For example, the kk district veterinarian A. Koch recommended in his work "Encyclopedia for Veterinary Medicine" (Volume X, p. 114) the Kwizda rubber bands as extremely useful. In a very detailed and particularly appreciative manner, Hofrat Professor Dr. Friedrich Anton Zürn in his "Crockery or harness theory", which appeared in Leipzig in 1897, the Kwizda patent wrappers and protective devices for horse's feet. Around 30 images of Kwizda products have been preserved in this work.

In the same way, the kuk senior veterinarian Benedikt Neidhart spoke out about Kwizda products in his work “Lessons on Hippology” (p. 83). The famous distance rider kuk Rittmeister F. Höfer, the fourth winner of the distance ride Berlin – Vienna, Vienna – Berlin 1892 , mentions in his work “In 74 hours from the Danube to the Spree” (p. 17) that he drives his horse Minerva every day treated with diluted Kwizda restitution fluid and was satisfied with the results. Kuk Rittmeister Graf Starhemberg, the first winner of the Vienna-Berlin distance ride, who also successfully uses Kwizda restitution fluid on this ride, describes it as a preparation that should not be missing in any stable. The Kwizda patented rubber strips have also been used with great success on their rides by numerous other endurance riders and a large number of veterinarians have recognized the suitability of the Kwizda protective devices for horse's feet.

The company's awards at various exhibitions were numerous. It won 30 gold and silver medals and over 30 honorary and recognition diplomas. In 1900 Kwizda was awarded the Grand Prix at the Paris World Exhibition .

The fact that it was entrusted with deliveries for several court stables and the stables of all the archdukes, as well as many high- ranking personalities , also spoke for the solidity and reputation of the company . By being awarded the title of “ kuk court supplier ” as well as royal Romanian and princely Bulgarian court supplier, the company received the award it deserved from the very highest level.

After Julius Kwizda, the founder's grandson, Richard Kwizda, took over the company in 1924.
