Julius Mägiste (born December 6 . Jul / 19th December  1900 greg. In Kudina (German Kudding ), today community Palamuse , Estonia ; † 11. March 1978 in Lund , Sweden ) was an Estonian linguist and expert on Baltic Finnish languages .

Life

Even as a schoolboy, Mägiste compared texts in various Baltic Finnish languages ​​and noticed differences between his regional dialect and the standard language. He attended the Alexander I high school and the Hugo Treffner high school in Dorpat (Tartu) .

In 1919 he was enrolled at the University of Tartu and studied first Greek and Latin, and later Baltic Finnish languages. He wrote his master's thesis on Ingrian in 1923. The following year he passed a kind of entrance examination for doctoral candidates and went on a two-year study visit to Finland to collect material for his doctoral thesis.

The departure of a professor brought him back to the University of Tartu before he could finish his doctoral thesis, where work on a Finnish-Estonian dictionary had just started. It was not until 1928 that he finished a doctoral thesis on the topic of the Finnish Baltic deminutives.

In 1929 he was appointed professor of Baltic Finnish languages ​​at the University of Tartu. In 1938/39 he was visiting professor at the University of Budapest . In the turmoil of war in the Baltic States , he fled to Sweden via Germany in 1944 . In the Swedish Lund arrived, he earned his living first with various lectures at the local university before 1950 it there as a lecturer in Finno-Ugric established. In 1969 he retired.

Julius Mägiste was an avid collector and researcher of various Estonian dialects. He wrote over 400 academic papers on personal names, place names, Estonian phonetics, morphology and the theory of derivatives, the relationship between Finnish and Estonian, and Russian and German loanwords in Estonian.
