Julius Thikötter (born April 12, 1832 in Barmen - Wupperfeld (now part of Wuppertal ), † November 16, 1913 in Bremen ) was a Protestant clergyman and a prolific theological writer.

Life

From 1851 to 1854 Thikötter studied Protestant theology at the University of Bonn, where he became a member of the Alemannia fraternity (his song collection "Neue Rhein-Lieder" (1888) is dedicated to it). In 1855 he was appointed assistant preacher to Neviges near Elberfeld. This was followed by a time as a pastor in Hattingen , where he also served as superintendent of the Hattingen church district from 1861 . Since 1864 Thikötter was pastor at the church "Our dear women" in Bremen and garrison preacher .

Thikötter was inherently shaped by the revival. Theologically he tied in with Richard Rothe and Albrecht Ritschl and belonged to what was then called the "positive" direction. In the dispute over the liberal theologian Albert Kalthoff , who had been appointed to the Martinikirche in Bremen since 1888 , he and six like-minded pastors from Bremen successfully ousted him in 1906 because of "atheism".
