Julius Victor Berger
Julius Victor Berger (born July 20, 1850 in Neutitschein , Moravia , † November 17, 1902 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter who is best known for his genre painting and portraits .
Life
Julius Victor Berger was a son of the painter Ignaz Johann Berger . He entered the Vienna Art Academy at the age of 14 . In 1874 he was granted a travel grant that allowed him to study art in Rome for three years . After returning to Vienna, he shared the apartment for a short time with his painter colleague Emil Jakob Schindler and his wife Anna Sofie née Bergen. During a cure for Schindler, Berger began a relationship with his wife Anna, which resulted in a child. She was the half-sister of Alma Mahler-Werfel .
In 1881 Julius Victor Berger became professor for decorative painting at the Vienna School of Applied Arts . In 1887 a professorship at the Vienna Art Academy followed. Hans Makart was one of his friends .
Berger's main work is the large ceiling painting in Hall XIX of the Kunsthistorisches Museum , Vienna.
He rests in a grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 14 A, number 8).
