Julius von Kennel

Julius Thomas von Kennel (born June 10, 1854 in Schwegenheim near Germersheim , † January 24, 1939 in Munich ) was a German zoologist and entomologist ( lepidopterist ).

Life

Julius von Kennel studied in Würzburg in the group of students of the zoologist and explorer Karl Semper , later he became assistant to the ecologist Karl August Möbius in Kiel . During his studies he became a member of the AMV zu Würzburg . After completing his habilitation , he began his academic career at the University of Würzburg . 1882/1883 visited the island of Trinidad , Venezuela and the area of ​​the Orinoco and its tributaries as part of a research trip. He later lectured at the Aschaffenburg Forest Academy . He was considered a profound knowledge of the small butterflies ( Microlepidoptera ), especially the family of Winder ( Tortricidae ). From 1887 to 1915 he was a full professor of zoology at the University of Tartu (at that time: Imperial University of Dorpat, after Russification in 1893 Imperial University of Yuryev; located in today's Estonia) and from 1922 director of the Zoological Museum of Riga (Latvia). In 1925 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
