According to tradition, Julius was a Roman senator who was baptized by the priest Rufinus and who distributed his property to the poor. The Emperor Commodus found out about this and then handed Julius over to Captain Vitellius. Vitellius had Julius thrown into dungeon and beat him to death on the third day. The Christians Eusebius, Pontianus, Peregrinus and Innocentius buried the body of Julius on August 19th near the Via Aurelia . August 19th is therefore the saint's feast day .
