Juliusz Nowina-Sokolnicki (born December 18, 1925 in Pinsk , † August 17, 2009 in Colchester ) was a Polish politician in the former Polish government in exile in London.

Activities as politician in exile

Nowina-Sokolnicki was a politician in the London government in exile after 1945. After their disintegration into two competing camps in 1954, he supported the exiled President August Zaleski in relation to the Council of Three .

When August Zaleski died in 1972, he claimed to have been appointed as his successor and claimed the presidency in exile until the presidential elections in 1990 after the end of the People's Republic of Poland . However, the majority of Poles abroad recognized Stanisław Ostrowski as the exile president when August Zaleski died and found Nowina-Sokolnicki's claims to be illegal.

Claims to nobility and the order of St. Stanislaus

Juliusz Nowina-Sokolnicki was of noble origin, but without a title. A former representative of the Sokolnicki family carried the title of count, but this line died out. Since the beginning of the 1970s, Nowina-Sokolnicki Graf ( Count ) called himself .

As president in exile, he re-established the old Polish Order of Saint Stanislaus and became its grand master. This new order was not recognized by the Polish government after 1990. In 1990, the Order of St. Stanislaus was reactivated in Poland with Marek Kwiatkowski as Grand Master.
