Julia Maria "Jully" Ramsay , née Ekström (born August 5, 1865 in Leppävirta , † March 24, 1919 in Helsinki ), was a Finnish-Swedish author and aristocratic genealogist .

Life

Jully Ramsay came from a Swedish noble family Eckström from Värmland , from which her grandfather had settled in Finland . Her parents were the engineer captain Carl August Ekström (1823-1900) and Alexandrine Hackman (1838-1918). She had not had any academic training, but was a wife and mother, in keeping with the spirit of the times, who was responsible for the housekeeping.

Nevertheless, guided exclusively by personal interest, she became a pioneer in family research, which until then had to be seen more as a male domain. One of the first, because Gabriel Anrep can also be seen as a pioneer of new research approaches, did not copy the traditional family traditions without checking, but based their compilations and research results largely on primary sources.

To this end, she herself visited long and frequent archives in Sweden and Finland. The result of her work, the four-band Frälsesläkter i Finland intill stora ofreden , earned her a lot of rejection from the old nobility but much more recognition. The publication not only led to a controversial debate at the time, but also laid the foundation for a new, scientific research method in the Swedish-speaking world. The mapping of the main lines and filiations according to primary sources was subsequently also carried out by Gustaf Elgenstierna or Tor Carpelan . A method that has persisted in genealogy to this day, whether it is resilient and scientific.

Ramsay was also a member of the Finnish Historical Society and an honorary member of the Society for Family Research in Finland.

She was married to the Finnish senator and later Minister August Ramsay (1859-1943), a brother of Wilhelm Ramsay , with whom she had three daughters and a son.
