The Kleine Kohn , lighthouse on Julssand

Julssand or Juelssand [ ˈjuːl̩sˌzant ] was an island in the Lower Elbe at the Hetlinger Schanze and from 1928 belonged to Hetlingen .

Julssand was first mentioned in a document at the end of the 17th century and had an area of around 265 hectares . It was inhabited continuously from 1704 until the last residents left the former island in the late 1990s. Then, probably by arson , a large fire destroyed the last residential building. Sand alluvial and changes in the river bed silted up the lower Elbe oxbow, so that the former island is now directly connected to the Hetlinger Schanze . Julssand has been part of the Haseldorfer Inner Elbe nature reserve with Elbe foreland since 1984 and is an important resting and breeding area for migratory birds.

At the western tip is the Julssand lighthouse , which was built in 1896 and is also called Kleiner Kohn by sailors . Until January 11, 2010, it was the oldest operating beacon on the Lower Elbe, then its fire was finally extinguished - the cost-benefit ratio of the very low and poorly recognizable beacon for the main fairway of the Lower Elbe at height in front of the illuminated Stade industrial area the Elbe island Lühesand was no longer sufficient from the point of view of the water and shipping administration .

The building continues to mark the entrance to Dwarsloch and thus to Haseldorfer Hafen. It is a listed building. Also on the former island is the approx. 186 m high, northern mast of Elbe crossing 1 , which carries a 220 kV three-phase current line across the Elbe.
