Lühesand is a 124 hectare long inland island in the Elbe, southeast of Stade in Lower Saxony. The island, which can only be reached by boat, houses a campsite.
The overhead line masts at Elbe crossing 1 and 2 , which are 189 and 227 meters high, are also located on Lühesand . They are the highest overhead line masts in Europe and in the lowest point of the sagging lines above the Elbe they still provide the required passage height of 75 meters.
The south-eastern part of the island (approx. 60 ha) has been a landscape protection area since the mid-1960s and was looked after by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) Stade until 2014 . In the period from April to October, visitors could also get to know the local bird life.
Breeding birds on Lühesand
On Lühesand breed about 60 species of birds: blackbird , oystercatchers , wagtail , tree pipit , Beutelmeise , Coot , blue tit , Linnet , Whinchat , Chaffinch , Great Spotted Woodpecker , Whitethroat , jay , magpie , pheasant , skylark , grasshopper warbler , willow warbler , garden warbler , redstart , yellow scoffers , Graugans , Grauschnäpper , Grünfink , Hausrotschwanz , Heckenbraunelle , Karmingimpel , Klappergrasmücke , Tit , devil , Buzzard , Mönchsgrasmücke , Nachtigall , Neuntöter , Nilgans , partridge , wood pigeon , Reed Bunting , Robins , Schnatterente , Schwanzmeise , Gull (130 pairs), thrush , Star , Herring , Stieglitz , Mallard , Sturmmöwe (3400 pairs), Sumpfrohrsänger , Teichralle , Teichrohrsänger , Kestrel , Wacholderdrossel , peregrine , Wiesenpieper , Wren , Zilpzalp and Zwergtaucher .
