June Pointer
June Pointer Whitmore (born November 30, 1953 in Oakland , California , † April 11, 2006 in Santa Monica , California) was an American singer and member of the Pointer Sisters .
Life
June Antoinette Pointer and her three older sisters Ruth , Anita and Bonnie learned to sing in a church choir in Oakland. As a 16-year-old, June performed in clubs with Bonnie under the name Pointers-A Pair .
In 1973 the four sisters released their debut album The Pointer Sisters , in 1975 they won a Grammy Award for their song Fairytale . Other hits were I'm So Excited , Fire , Slow Hand , Automatic and Jump (For My Love) .
During her career, June Pointer took drugs and became addicted to alcohol. In the 1980s she regularly missed concerts so her sisters had to perform without her. In April 2004, she was convicted in Hollywood of possession of cocaine .
June Pointer, who posed for an issue of Playboy , recorded two solo albums in 1983 and 1989 and eventually left the Pointer Sisters entirely.
From 1978 to 1991 she was married to William Oliver Whitmore; the couple remained childless.
June Pointer died of cancer on April 11, 2006 at the age of 52.
