The Junin slender- pouch rat ( Marmosops juninensis ) is a species of marsupial that occurs only in a small area in the Junín region of Peru on the eastern slope of the Andes between Tarma and Chanchamayo .

description

The animals reach a head body length of 10.4 to 11 cm, have a tail about 13.5 cm long and reach a weight of about 27 g. The color of the fur on the back and the head is a warm red-brown, with the middle of the back being darker than the sides. The hair on the back is 7 to 9 mm long. There are noticeable dark circles around the eyes and the center of the muzzle is slightly lighter than the rest of the head. The belly is gray-white with a white stripe in the middle. The tops of the feet are white. Females do not have a pouch. The number of teats is unknown.

Habitat and way of life

The Junin slim-pouch rat lives in primary mountain forests at altitudes of 1390 to 2310 meters. The forests have a dense undergrowth formed by ferns and various shrubs and are formed by trees whose maximum height in this biotope is only about 10 meters. Most of the plants in the habitat of the Junin slim-pouch rat belong to the families of the arum plants , legumes , pepper plants , red plants and black- mouth plants . A single specimen was caught in a field where bananas, coffee and corn grew. Only six specimens of the Junin slim-pouched rat have been caught so far, and almost nothing is known about their lifestyle, diet and reproduction.

Since the Junin slender-pouch rat has only a small distribution area of ​​less than 20,000 km² and is only known from 10 places within this distribution area, it is considered endangered.
