Juozapas Jonas Skvireckas

Juozapas Jonas Skvireckas (* 1873 in Rinkūnai , Rajongemeinde Pasvalys ; † 1959 Zams , Tyrol ) was a Lithuanian Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kaunas .

Life

His father was Vincentas Skvireckas and his mother Elzbieta Krasauskaitė, a peasant family. Juozapas attended the Smilgiai School in the Panevėžys district . From 1885 to 1892 he graduated from Panevėžys grammar school with honors .

From 1892 to 1896 he studied at the Nierlitauischen seminary . After 4 years of study he was sent to Saint Petersburg . There he graduated from the Saint Petersburg Spiritual Academy as a candidate for theology . He was ordained a priest in 1899. In 1919 he became auxiliary bishop (consecrated by Antanas Karosas , the co- consecrants were Juozapas Matulaitis and Pranciškus Karevičius ). From 1926 to 1959 he was Archbishop of Kaunas.
