Jupiaba is a genus of freshwater fish from the family of the true tetras (Characidae). Most species of the genus live in the north east of South America, Jupiaba acanthogaster occurs in the river basin of the Río Paraguay , Jupiaba polylepis in the north-east Brazilian Rio Parnaíba .

Jupiaba species are high-backed, laterally flattened and 4 to 12 cm long. They are rather plainly colored and often show a black spot behind the gill covers and on the tail stalk. Diagnostic features of the genus are elongated, prickly pelvic bones, which in some species protrude through the skin in the anterior abdominal area.

Systematics

The genus Jupiaba was introduced in 1997 by the Brazilian ichthyologist Angela M. Zanata. Before that, the species described up to then belonged to Astyanax or Deuterodon .
