Jurij Smyrnow

Jurij Oleksandrowytsch Smyrnow ( Ukrainian Юрій Олександрович Смирнов ; born August 17, 1948 in Bui , Kostroma Oblast , Soviet Union ) is a Ukrainian policeman and politician. Smyrnow was Minister of the Interior of Ukraine between 2001 and 2003 .

Life

In 1970 Jurij Smyrnow completed a four-year study of law at the Yaroslav the Wise Law Academy in Kharkiv and started a career in the police in Kharkiv in December 1971. There he made it to the head of the criminal police until 1994. He then held a leading position in the Ministry of Interior of Luhansk Oblast from 1994 to 1997 and from 1997 as Minister of Internal Affairs of Dnepropetrovsk Oblast and Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs in the South-East Region.

Between May 2000 and March 2001 he was deputy minister and head of the Interior Ministry of Ukraine in Kiev and thus head of the Kiev police (chief of police) during the mass protests "Ukraine without Kuchma " ( Ukrainian Ukrajina bes Kutschmy ). On 26 March 2001 Jurij Smyrnov was, in succession of Yuriy Kravchenko in the Cabinet Yushchenko , Cabinet Kinakh and the first Cabinet Yanukovych Interior Minister of Ukraine . He held this office until August 27, 2003, after which he became Advisor to the President of Ukraine and Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine until 2005 . He was then responsible for security as the first deputy chairman of the private bank until 2008 .

He last had the rank of Colonel General of the Police and received numerous honors and awards. Including the Order of Merit of Ukraine first (2003), second (1998) and third (1996) class. Smyrnow is married and has two children.
