Juris Maklakovs (2010; as Commander of the Armed Forces)

Juris Maklakovs (born October 27, 1964 in Nuķši ) is a Latvian ambassador and former major general . From 2006 to 2010 he was the military commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces . He then worked as an ambassador for his home country from 2011 to 2019.

Life

Juris Maklakovs was born in Nuķši, in Ludzas novads , in what was then the Latvian SSR in 1964 .

From 1982 to 1985 Juris Maklakovs attended the Soviet Air Force technical school in Kaliningrad, where he was trained as an officer. After being used in the troupe, this was followed by further studies in Moscow from 1988 to 1992.

After his native Latvia regained its sovereignty, he held various positions at the country's newly established military academy from 1992 (initially as a lecturer, then as its commander). In the years 2003 to 2004 he attended postgraduate studies at the United States Army War College and then took over the post of commander of the Latvian Air Force .

On June 30, 2006 he was promoted to brigadier general and shortly thereafter took over the post of military commander in chief of the Latvian armed forces from his predecessor Gaidis Andrejs Zeibots . In February 2008 he was promoted to major general. After the usual four years of service, he resigned from the post of commander in July 2010 - his successor was Raimonds Graube .

Diplomatic career

After his tenure as commander of the armed forces, Maklakovs found a new use in the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs from August 2010. From 2011 to 2015 he was his home country's ambassador to Kazakhstan . Since August 2015 he has been ambassador to Azerbaijan .

Private

Maklakovs is married and has one son. In addition to his mother tongue, he is also fluent in Russian and English. His hobbies include tennis and hunting.
