Life

Just Mathias Thiele graduated from the traditional metropolitan cities , as did Andreas Gottlob Rudelbach . Thiele had his first publication in 1816 in the magazine Danfana ; the following year his first book, the novel Bjergmandsdalen, was published .

As a student he was part of the circle of artists and intellectuals around Knud Lyne and Kamma Rahbek in the Bakkehuset ; The memory of this time ( Erindringer fra Bakkehuset ) he published in 1869. Thiele also visited the salons of Friederike Brun .

From 1817 to 1835 he worked for the Danish Royal Library . Following the example of the Brothers Grimm , Thiele collected Danish folk tales on his travels through the country. He published it in four volumes as Danske Folkesagn I – IV between 1818 and 1823. His lyrical and dramatic works, however, are subordinate. Thiele was rewarded with a scholarship for his fairy tale collections. He traveled to Rome , where he befriended the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. Thiele became his biographer and was a member of the founding committee for the establishment of the Thorvaldsen Museum .
