distribution
The names Justin and Justinus have long been known in the German-speaking world , but they were never very common here until the end of the 20th century. In the 1990s the popularity of the name Justin rose sharply in Germany , so that in the 2000s he was among the twenty most frequently given male first names. There was a downward trend in the early 2010s. Many parents in Germany prefer - unlike in earlier times - an English pronunciation of the name.
According to a master's thesis written at the University of Oldenburg in 2009, certain (especially English and exotic) first names of students generate prejudice on the part of teachers. According to this work, Justin was among the most unpopular first names among the primary school teachers surveyed - a total of 500 questionnaires were evaluated.
The popularity of English-sounding names in Germany, the so-called " Kevinism ", led some authors to onomatopoeic or satirical spellings of the name Justin such as Dschastin , Schastin or Tschastin (for the son of the main character in Kai Twilfer's satire Schantall, tu ma die Omma wave ! ).
