Justin Matthew Turner (born November 23, 1984 in Long Beach , California ) is an American baseball player for the Los Angeles Dodgers in Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played for the Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets .

Career

Turner was selected by the New York Yankees in the 29th round of the 2005 MLB Draft , but he did not sign.

Cincinnati Reds

He was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the seventh round (204th overall) of the 2006 MLB Draft and received a $ 50,000 bonus upon signing with the organization.

Turner played for the Reds' Rookie League team Billings Mustangs, where he could be seen in all four infield positions and in the outfield. He finished the season with a batting average of .338. He was promoted to Double-A Team Chattanooga Lookouts within two years and finished the 2008 season at the age of 23 with a batting average of .289.

Baltimore Orioles

2009-2010

On December 9, 2008, during the Winter Meetings, Turner was traded to the Baltimore Orioles along with Ryan Freel and infielder Brandon Waring. Turner spent most of the 2009 season with the Triple-A Team Norfolk Tides. He played mostly the second and third baseman and ended the year with a batting average of .300 and an OPS of .749.

He made his major league debut on September 9, 2009 at Fenway Park , pinch hitting Melvin Mora and finishing the game on third base. Three days later he scored his first MLB hit at Yankee Stadium . He finished the season 3-18. Turner played 12 games in the MLB that season, three of them as a starter.

Turner was invited to spring training as a player on the 40-man roster , but was reassigned to Norfolk at the end of the camp. On April 12, 2010, however, the Orioles put second baseman Brian Roberts on the 15-day Disabled List and brought back Turner from Norfolk. In 17 games for the Orioles, he beat .111 (3 hits in 27 at-bats).

New York Mets

2010-2013

On May 25, 2010, Turner joined the New York Mets and was sent to the Triple-A Team Buffalo Bisons . On June 16, Turner was called to the Mets and Nick Evans was sent to Buffalo.

On April 19, 2011, Turner was again brought from Buffalo to New York. He scored his first home run against the Houston Astros on May 15, 2011. On May 21, Turner scored a seventh consecutive RBI in a Subway Series game at Yankee Stadium , setting a Mets rookie record for most following games with an RBI. With this record and other impressive statistics, Turner was named NL Rookie of the Month for May 2011. It was the first Met to win the award since its inception in 2001.

After the 2013 season, the Mets did not renew Turner's contract, making him a free agent. In 301 games with the Mets over four seasons, he achieved a batting average of .265.

Los Angeles Dodgers

After his release from the Mets, Turner hadn't found a new team when Los Angeles Dodgers coach Tim Wallach saw Turner beat a Cal State Fullerton alumni game. Turner signed a contract with the Dodgers on February 5, 2014 with an invitation to spring training. On March 16, he was inducted into the Dodgers major league team.

2014

Turner played 109 games due to his versatility and injuries to Hanley Ramírez and Juan Uribe. Turner led the team with an average of .340, hitting 7 home runs with 43 RBI in 288 hits. On January 16, 2015, he signed a one-year contract with the Dodgers. He became the starting third baseman for much of the 2015 season, beating .294 with 16 homers and 60 RBI.

2015

In the 2015 National League Division Series against his former team the Mets, Turner led the Dodgers with 10 hits in 19 at-bats with a batting average of .526. After the Dodgers were eliminated from the postseason, he was operated on on his left knee. He signed a new annual $ 5.1 million deal with the Dodgers.

2016

In 2016, Turner played 151 games, scoring 27 home runs and 90 RBI. He hit .275. He had six hits (including a home run) in 15 at-bats in the 2016 National League Division Series . In the 2016 National League Championship Series and he only hit .200.

2017

On December 23, 2016, Turner signed a four-year contract worth $ 64 million. Turner started the 2017 season with a batting average of .379 before being placed on the Disabled List with a tendon injury. On July 6, he won the All-Star Final Vote and earned a spot in the 2017 MLB All-Star Game . Turner finished the season with a .322 batting average, .415 on-base percentage, 21 home runs and 71 RBIs. In the 2017 NLDS he had six hits, including a home run in the ninth inning of Game 2 against the Chicago Cubs . In the 2017 World Series , he only had four hits in 25 at-bats. when the Dodgers lost in seven games against the Houston Astros . Turner broke Dusty Baker's franchise record for most RBIs in a single postseason.

2018

Turner was hit by a ball on his left wrist during spring training on March 19, 2018. He suffered a fracture that did not require surgery, but he had to start the season on the Disabled List. He did not rejoin the active team until May 15. Turner also missed the time after the All-Star hiatus, but bounced back in August and September. In 202 at-bats since the All-Star break, Turner hit .356 with 1,066 OPS, 24 doubles and 9 home runs. Turner's hot phase continued into the 2018 NLDS , where he scored a hit in 9 of 18 at-bats. He beat .333 in the 2018 World Series , which his team lost to the Boston Red Sox .

2019

On June 14, Turner hit his 100th career homerun against Kyle Hendricks in a game against the Chicago Cubs .

Personal

Justin Turner was born in Long Beach, California, to John and Betsy Turner. He has a younger sister.

Turner married longtime girlfriend Kourtney Pogue in December 2017.
