Justin Moisescu (born March 5, 1910 in Cândeşti , Argeş district ; † July 31, 1986 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian clergyman. He was the 4th Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church from 1977 to 1986 .

Life

Justin Moisescu's parents died during the First World War . Between 1922 and 1930 he attended the seminary for orphans in Câmpulung . He completed this training with distinction. Subsequently, he was sent to Greece on a scholarship from Patriarch Miron Cristea . In 1934 he returned with a magna cum laude degree in theology .

On the recommendations of the University of Athens and the Romanian Ambassador to Greece, the Patriarch Miron Cristea enabled him to continue his academic training through a two-year doctoral scholarship at the Catholic theological faculty of the University of Strasbourg . With the material collected in Strasbourg and the elaborated work, he returned to the University of Athens, where he wrote his dissertation in 1937 with the title Evagrius Ponticus . Submitted his life, work and teaching . In the same year he was awarded a doctorate by the University of Bucharest .

In the following years he worked as a lecturer in Latin at the Nifon seminary in Bucharest (1937–1938) and as professor of the New Testament at the Orthodox theological faculty of the University of Warsaw (1938–1939), succeeding Nicholas Arseniev . In Warsaw he offered, among other things, the following lectures: General and Special Introduction to the Books of the New Testament , The Exegesis of the Letter to the Galatians and The Exegesis of the Prologue of the Gospel of John .

In 1942 he got a call as professor for the exegesis of the New Testament at the theological-orthodox faculty in Chernivtsi - Suceava . In Chernivtsi he held the lectures: Introduction to the Holy Books of the New Testament , Exegesis and Biblical Hermeneutics . 1946 became a professor at the Theological Orthodox Faculty of the University of Bucharest.

In the 1960s he became a member of the Christian Peace Conference . He took part in the 1st and 2nd All-Christian Peace Assemblies , which took place in Prague in 1961 and 1964 , and was elected to their advisory committee.
