Euagrios Pontikos ( Latinized Evagrius Ponticus ; * 345 in Ibora , Pontos , † 399 in Egypt) was a Christian monk (" desert father "), ascetic and writer.

Life

Euagrios - pupil of Gregory of Nazianzen - lived with the monks in the Nitrian desert. He was ordained a deacon in Constantinople . As a follower of Origen he was posthumously condemned several times, for example in 553 at the second council of Constantinople . Euagrios played a major role in the outbreak of the Origenist disputes among the monks in the Egyptian desert at the end of the 4th century as the leader of the educated Origenist monks who were expelled by Bishop Theophilos of Alexandria after the death of Euagrios and received by John Chrysostom in Constantinople found.

reception

Euagrios is the founder of the eight load doctrine (see Mortal Sin ), which was adopted and further developed by Johannes Cassianus around the year 420, and acquired a high reputation among the anarchists through his literary work and his scientific education . Little of the work of Euagrios Pontikos has survived today. The majority of the writings have come down to us in pseudo- epigraphic form, for example from Neilos von Ankyra . The scriptures are Bible commentaries based on Alexandrian exegesis and ascetic scriptures. Since many of his works were translated into other languages of the Christian Orient early on, Euagrios became a mediator of monastic spirituality in the Orient and Occident.
