Justiniano Borgoño Castañeda (born September 5, 1836 in Trujillo , † January 27, 1921 in Lima ) was general and in 1894 he was president of Peru for six months .

He joined the military in 1856 and took part in the saltpeter war as an officer . In 1883 he was injured in the lost battle against the Chilean troops near Huamachuco .

On April 1, 1894, President Remigio Morales Bermúdez died after a brief illness. While Peru found itself in a serious political crisis, the Council of Ministers transferred the office to the second Vice President (since 1890) Borgoño. He bypassed the democratically oriented First Vice President Pedro Alejandrino del Solar , who should actually have taken over the official business according to the constitution.

This dissolved the two chambers of parliament and called new elections. An alliance of Civilistas and the Democratic Party, including exiled Nicolás de Piérola , called for democratic and direct elections. When Borgoño refused and also deposed numerous local administrations, the opposition candidates decided against participating in the ballot, which was then largely contested by the members of the Partido Constitucional .

The new president was the national hero of the Saltpetre War , Andrés Avelino Cáceres on August 10, 1894 .
