Justin Bertuch (born May 8, 1564 in Tennstedt ; † August 27, 1626 in Schulpforte ) was a German educator .

Life

Born as the son of Council Chamberlain Vincentus Bertuch and his wife Martha, b. Schulze, he first attended the school in his hometown. On November 10, 1579 he came to the state school in Pforta as an alumnus and after six years he moved to the University of Leipzig . There he acquired the degree of master's degree on January 29, 1590. In 1593 he was appointed vice rectorate at the Pforta State School , which he held until January 1601; then he became the rector of the institution.

He held his office as rector for 25 years and is said to have done a lot for the school. This long term of office brought continuity into school life, which had a positive effect on the development of the school. Right at the beginning of his term of office, in 1602, new school regulations were issued under Elector Christian II of Saxony , which remained valid until 1773. Rector Bertuch also owes the school the first more comprehensive work on its history, which was even reprinted twice in the 18th century. Bertuch died in 1626 and was buried in the church of Schulpforte with an epitaph (no longer available).

A very important descendant was the publisher and entrepreneur Friedrich Justin Bertuch in Weimar .
