Jwan Yosef
Jwan Yosef (born 1984 in Syria ) is a Swedish painter , object and conceptual artist of Kurdish - Armenian origin. He lives and works in London .
life and work
Jwan Yosef's father is Kurd , his mother comes from Armenia . His first name means "handsome, beautiful and young" in the Kurdish language . The family emigrated to Sweden , and Jwan Yosef showed considerable talent in painting and drawing from an early age. He attended Pernbys målarskola from 2004 to 2006 , then completed a bachelor's degree at the Swedish Art School Konstfack in Stockholm and in 2010 and 2011 a Master of Fine Arts degree at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.
The artist names Neo Rauch , Gerhard Richter and the Estonian video artist and painter Jaan Toomik as reference points. He works exclusively with oil on Perspex . He processes video stills or photographs, both private and found somewhere. It is mostly seemingly unimportant details or unimportant images that attract his attention. "The idea is to actually make something out of nothing. Like assembling different images to fit my own image world, a collage almost. “His paintings oscillate in the direction of abstraction and decomposition, and seem to avoid any political or social conflict, as well as possible religious associations, although he comes from the Middle East and himself referred to as deeply spiritual. In contrast, the erotic or sexual component of his works is evident. O-Ton Jwan Yosef: "The look of wet paint or a smooth surface immediately creates a desire in the viewer to touch, to get closer, to become intimate."
Yosef's work has been shown at a number of group exhibitions and art fairs. His 2013 solo shows were Painting about Sex, Flesh and Violence, lol (in London) and High Notes (in Stockholm). In 2015 his works were shown in the Galleri Bon as part of the group exhibition There and Back Again - together with works by his Konstfack colleagues Josef Bull, Petr Davydtchenko and Natasja Loutchko. He is a founding member and studio owner of the Bomb Factory Art Foundation in Archway, North London.
In April 2016, Jwan Yosef and Ricky Martin officially announced their relationship at the amfAR gala in São Paulo . In November 2016, Martin reported on the couple's engagement on the Ellen DeGeneres TV show . Martin and Yosef have been married since January 2018.
Quote
“Being far away is a constant in my life - or at least the lack of belonging. My background is based on a lack of belonging. Not necessarily in a way that is marked by sadness, but by the feeling of being outside. As an outsider you have a lot of freedom. "
