life and work

Károly Aszlány was born in Orşova as the son of the Hungarian philosopher and writer Dezső Aszlányi. After attending school and studying in Nagybecskerek , he lived in Vienna , Budapest and Germany , and attended a music college in Denmark . For a while he worked as a journalist for the Hungarian newspaper Sporthírlap. In 1927 Aszlány won a prize from the renowned Hungarian literary magazine Nyugat with the short story “The Snowman” . This experience moved him to become a writer. His debut novel was published in Budapest in 1929 under the title "Geld in Sicht".

In the 1930s, Aszlány became known and successful with numerous burlesque entertainment novels in the Hungarian language. At times he wrote under the pseudonym Kirk Van Hossum . His work, which has also been translated into other European languages, is strongly influenced by British humor and American comedies of the time and has been filmed several times. In Germany he became known to a large audience in 1937 through the film comedy Sieben Ohrfeigen , the film adaptation of his novel of the same name.

Aszlányi died near Dorog in 1938 when he tried to avoid a child in his car and had an accident. His grave is in the Farkasréti cemetery in Budapest (grave site 15-1-146).
